BRTC Hosts Child Abuse Awareness Event

POCAHONTAS, AR April 21— Black River Technical College (BRTC) hosted a child abuse event Tuesday.

BRTC Social Science Instructor Rachel Koons welcomed attendees and introduced speaker Randolph County Department of Children and Family Services Mylea White, who spoke about statistics of child abuse in Northeast Arkansas.

NEA Children\’s Advocacy Center Executive Director Shawnie Wilson who spoke about the services the non-profit provides and what the public can do to help. Community Education Specialist for NEA Children’s Advocacy Center Lauren Brown also spoke to attendees.

A child abuse survivor shared her own experience of growing up in a home with a abusive mother.

The event ended with attendees planting blue pinwheels on the BRTC lawn in honor of child abuse victims and the children who have lost their lives due to abuse.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers, the NEA Children\’s Advocacy Center, and members of the motorcycle club Warriors Empowering Children were available to share information about their organizations and how to join.

“We can’t thank you all enough for your support today!  It was another great event full of so much love and encouragement from you all,” said event organizer Koons.
